Everyone should have at least one special person in their life who, whether that one knew it or not, planted seeds that sprouted into life and more seed-bearing at that.
I invite you to join me over at Ishshah’s Story for this month’s contributor post, Faith and Flannelgraphs, in honor of my maternal grandmother, who graduated to the arms of Jesus this month back in 1967.
Only 56 years old, she was gone too soon – but not too soon to make an impression in my young heart that Holy Spirit continues to mess with today. My collaboration with Ishshah’s Story is part of that holy ‘messing’. Here’s a brief excerpt:
She loved to teach the children whether in song, story, or…felt. Who knew that felt could be so compelling? Bible stories came alive when she took to the flannelgraph board on Sunday morning. But it was the hours spent beforehand at her table spread with scissors, colorful paints and patterned pieces of felt that planted missionary seeds in my young heart.

Nancy,
This is one of your best writings.
I can see you with your Grandmother cutting out flannel graphs. What a special time that was for her to be with you also.
I think one of my favorite times at Garland VBS was telling the story with flannelgraphs and then letting the children each have a character or animal or house or plant. I would tell the story and they would put the flannel item where it should be in the story. They loved it also. It helped them to learn and reinforced
the story. I think the brilliant colors helped them remember.
Keep up the great work.
Donna
Thank you, Donna. My grandmother was very special to me and all these years later, I still miss her at times. She was full of life and sure knew how to make those flannelgraph characters take on a life of their own! I’m so glad you enjoyed that at Garland’s VBS; no doubt that will be a fond memory for many of those children. May flannelgraph live on! 🙂 And I’m glad you liked this particularly special post ♥ ~ Nancy
Nanc,
I pray that you will meet your African sister, only Holy Spirit knows how to arrange that, but
I have faith that Holy Spirit will. How awesome is that!
Jan
Thank you, Jan. I’m so glad you’re my sister and we shared the same grandmother. Sisters in Christ are wonderful, too – wherever they are on this globe! One thing’s for sure – we shall all be praising together one day ♥
Amen! 🙂
